For the people from EU/EEA country doesn’t need any kind of permit or visa to move to Portugal for work or for living in. Only the people of non-EU countries will need work permit or residence permit for working or for settling in Portugal respectively.

When it comes about visa obtaining, most of the visas for Portugal, you can obtain from your local Portuguese Embassy. Basically, there are two types of visas:

Schengen Visa is the visa that allows you to stay in Portugal for the time period not longer than 90 days and to travel across 25 countries covered in Schengen area. This visa you can obtain by filling an application form, applying to local Portuguese Embassy and paying a small fee.

Residency Permit is the visa required for working and living in Portugal permanently. This you can obtain from Portuguese Immigration Office. Signing up with the social security and getting a tax code is also important.

Documents Required for Relocation to Portugal

  • Original Passport and one certified copy
  • "Certificado de Bagagem" i.e. Certificate of baggage issued by the Portuguese Consulate at origin
  • Visa copy
  • Details of inventory in Portuguese
  • Declaration according to EU regulations
  • Original Bill of Lading (OBL)
  • Residence Certificate
  • Copy of work contract, if valid
  • Proof of application for Residence Permit
  • Copy of Identity Card by Diplomats

Original Passport and certified copy

When moving to Portugal, you must have your original passport stating the residence place abroad. Also, you must have a certified copy of passport for reference.

"Certificado de Bagagem" i.e. Certificate of baggage issued by the Portuguese Consulate at origin

The baggage certificate or “Certificado de Bagagem must show that all the goods are used and have been owned by you for more than 6 months. Additionally, it also prove that you (owner of the goods) have been residing in the country of origin for over 12 months.

Visa copy

You must own a copy of Visa before moving to Portugal. There are types of visas that can be obtained in this country, which are as follows:

  • Transit Visa (1 to 5 days with single or double entry)
  • Short-term Visa (1 to 90 days with single, double, and multiple entry)
  • Long-term Visa (For stay exceeding 90 days)

Details of inventory in Portuguese

As Portuguese is the spoken language in the country, you must possess a detailed inventory list in Portuguese language. All items that are to be imported must be enlisted in the list.

Declaration according to EU Regulations

You must declare your goods as per the rules laid by European Union. You must declare restricted/prohibited/dutiable items in the list.

Original Bill of Lading (OBL)

To release your freight from the country of origin to the destination, you’ll need Original Bill of Lading. It is a mandatory document that helps to confirm whether the consignment has been received by the agent at the port or not. 

Residence Certificate

Residence certificate or Atestado de Residencia can be acquired by you (owner of the goods) from the Parish Council in residence region in Portugal. This certificate must state that you are living at the new address for no more than 4 months.

Copy of work contract, if valid

If you have been employed in any company situated in Portugal then you must provide a copy of your work contract as a proof of employment.

Proof of application for Residence Permit

Portuguese nationals are not bound to present a proof of application for a residence permit. On the other hand if the owner of the goods is a non-citizen of the origin country, evidence of residency for duration of minimum of 12 months is mandatory. This can be proven with a copy of ID card, employment letter from the origin country, or certificate issued by the Portuguese Consulate.

Copy of Identity Card by Diplomats

Diplomats relocating to Portugal must have a copy of their identity card. This ensure easy immigration to the country.

The Do’s

 

  • The primary step that counts is the advance planning of your move.
  • The next comes in this list is making a checklist to avoid any problem in future.
  • Then comes the Sensible Packing, that means, to assemble all the tools and objects that you are going to need. For this purpose, first make a list of all your requirements for the same, including the entire primary and smaller objects; start with boxes.
  • Make use of uniformly sized boxes, so that they stack together neatly. As for the big boxes, start with a small number, now double that number of medium-sized boxes that can easily be stacked on top of these big boxes, and add a very large number of small boxes (as they serve the maximum of our purpose).
