Documents Required for Relocating to Mexico

Passport

The most important document that is needed to make a shift to Mexico with household goods is your passport. It is an evidence of your identity with signify all the details like Full name, birth place, date of birth, and more. If any of your family member is accompanying you to the country then make sure they carry their passport too otherwise you won’t be allowed to relocate.

Original Bill of Lading (OBL) / Air Waybill (AWB)

The submission of Original Bill Of Lading is a mandatory step during the process of relocation to Mexico. You should submit it prior to goods arrival at the destination port so carrier’s receipt can be confirmed.

Evidence of ownership, if applicable (for artifacts and antiques)

Antiques, carpets, paintings, and artifacts must be declared on the list of packing and may be imported in certain quantities.

Import Permit Along with Diplomatic Franchise from the General Customs Authority

It is significant for diplomats to get the Import Permit as well as the Diplomatic Franchise from the General Customs Authority for duty-free import of items and customs clearance.

Legalized Original inventory List in Spanish, stamped by the Mexican Consulate in the country of origin (importer must have resided abroad for at least a period of 6 months)

The owner of goods must have the original legalized inventory list in Spanish language, stamped by the Mexican Consulate in the origin country and he/she must have lived abroad for at least 6 months.

Signed Letter to Customs, stating that articles in the shipment are used

You must submit a letter to the customs officials, signed and specifying that goods imported are utilized earlier by you.

Full Contact information of the shipper

In order to import the household goods to Mexico, you must provide the authorities with the shipper’s full contact information along with the destination address where goods are to be delivered.

For returning citizens and FM-2 Visa holders - FM-2 Visa and RFC / CURP

Permanent resident visa holders and Returning Mexican citizens must present an evidence of abroad residency for at least 6 months to import personal effects and household goods duty free.

FM-3 Visa, if applicable (foreigners)

Foreign citizens who have acquired FM-3 Visa or temporary residence visa should carry its photocopies along with the original one when moving to Mexico. 

For returning citizens, FM-2 / FM-3 Visa holders - List of electronic items including serial number, model and make and Full inventory list

Citizens who are returning to Mexico, have temporary or permanent visas must submit a list of electronic items to be shipped. This list should have all details of electronic goods such as model, date of manufacture, serial number, and brand.

Letter of Guarantee from employer (FM-3 Visa holders)

Holders of temporary resident visa must submit a letter of Guarantee stating that the organization holds responsibility for taxes and duties. Also, should the goods not be re-exported if employee decides to leave Mexico.  

Declaration of value of the shipment, signed by the client

You must declare the value of your goods shipped prior to shipping for customs clearance.

  • The next comes in this list is making a checklist to avoid any problem in future.
  • Then comes the Sensible Packing, that means, to assemble all the tools and objects that you are going to need. For this purpose, first make a list of all your requirements for the same, including the entire primary and smaller objects; start with boxes.
